Harm Reduction Tips for Edibles

Choose a consumption method

About Edibles

Edibles are cannabis products that are consumed orally rather than inhaled. They can include products such as gummies, baked goods, capsules and drinks.

Because edibles are processed differently by the body, the experience can feel different compared to inhaled cannabis. Effects often take longer to begin and can last significantly longer.

Understanding how edibles work can help you make more informed choices and reduce the chance of an uncomfortable experience.

Start Low, Go Slow

Edibles take longer to kick in, usually between 45 minutes to an hour or more, so wait at least 90 minutes before considering consuming more. Homemade edibles can be especially inconsistent batch to batch, so start low even if you’ve had the same batch before.

Remember: You can always take but, but you can never take less.

Patience

One of the most common experiences with edibles is consuming more before the first dose has fully taken effect.

Unlike inhaled cannabis edibles can take much longer for the effects to kick in. Giving yourself enough time before consuming more can help you better understand how your body responds to it.

Understand Your Dose

Edibles can vary significantly in strength, especially homemade products where cannabinoids may not be distributed evenly.

Although this can sometimes be hard with in unregulated markets, understanding the amount of THC in a product can help you know how much is right for you.

If making or eating homemade edibles, remember that the strength can vary between batches and even between individual pieces.

Set and Setting

Edibles can feel different from other forms of cannabis.

Choosing a safe comfortable environment and being around people you trust can help create a more positive experience, especially when trying a new batch, product or dose.

Your mood, surroundings and expectations can all influence how cannabis feels.

Prepare Ahead

Because edibles can have delayed and long lasting effects, planning ahead can help support a more comfortable experience.

Having food, water and a comfortable space available can make it easier to relax and respond to how you're feeling.

If Things Feel Too Strong

If an edible feels more intense than expected, try to remind yourself that the effects are temporary.

Finding a calm environment, staying hydrated, eating something and using grounding techniques may help you feel more comfortable while waiting for the effects to pass.

Some people report that CBD changes their experience of THC, but research is still developing and it is not guaranteed to reduce unwanted effects.
