What Cannabis Harm Reduction Means to Us

How we approach harm reduction, and why it starts with meeting people where they’re at.

When we talk about cannabis harm reduction at Let’s Budvocate, we’re not telling people to quit, cut down, or consume a certain way. For us, it’s about meeting people where they’re at, with honesty, care and respect.

Why people consume

People consume cannabis for lots of reasons. For some it’s recreational, enjoyment, creativity, connection. For others it helps with sleep, pain or their mental health. Often it’s a mix of both and for many people, it isn’t as simple as “just stop” or “just moderate”.

We know that because we’ve lived it.

Support, not judgement

To us, cannabis harm reduction means giving people practical, accurate information so they can make informed choices about their own consumption. In practice, that looks like:

  • Reducing avoidable harms without shame, stigma or discrimination

  • Supporting people whether or not their consumption looks “perfect”

  • Making space to reflect, rather than trying to control anyone’s behaviour

  • Recognising that abstinence-only messages don’t work for everyone

It also means talking openly about everyday risks that often get overlooked, like smoking from plastic bongs, holding smoke or vapour in, or mixing cannabis with tobacco. Not to scare anyone, but because people deserve to know what they’re actually being exposed to. What they do with that is up to them.

Nobody should have to reach a breaking point before they deserve support.

Holding more than one truth

Cannabis can be beneficial. It can also cause harm, especially when it’s consumed without much awareness or support. Both things can be true at once. Ignoring the harms doesn’t help anyone, but neither do fear, punishment, stigma or judgement.

Harm reduction is about responding to reality as it is, with care, understanding and choice.

Shaped by lived experience

Our approach comes from lived and living experience. We know what it’s like to consume cannabis in ways that carry harms or don’t always feel intentional. We know the confusion, defensiveness and shame that can come with it, and we know what it’s like not to see ourselves in mainstream drug education, and to wish better information had existed sooner.

Let’s Budvocate exists because we wanted to create the kind of support we wish we’d had when we needed it most: clearer, more honest, and a lot kinder.

Conscious, not controlled

We focus on conscious consumption, not rigid rules. Conscious consumption isn’t about being perfect or constantly monitoring yourself. It’s about awareness over time.

That might mean getting clearer on why you consume, learning how tolerance actually works, or noticing your patterns without judging yourself for them. It might mean changing how you consume, or taking a break when it suits you. It might also mean realising things are working fine as they are.

None of it has to happen in a straight line. Awareness on its own is already a form of harm reduction.

Education, not advice

Accurate information sits at the centre of all this. There’s a lot of misinformation about cannabis out there, and it can lead people into risks they didn’t need to take.

Let’s Budvocate is an educational, community-focused social enterprise. We focus on peer education, not individual advice, and we’re not a medical or crisis service. What we offer is accessible information and shared learning that supports people to make their own informed choices.

Community over judgement

At its core, harm reduction is about care: for our bodies, our minds, our communities, our culture and our future. We don’t believe people need fixing. We believe they need better information, better tools and a lot less stigma.

That’s what cannabis harm reduction means to us, and it guides everything we do, from Buducation and the Cutback Pack to the LB Framework and our advocacy.
