Choose a consumption method
About Pipes
Pipes are one of the simplest and most traditional ways to consume cannabis.
Like other inhalation methods, pipes involve combustion, which produces smoke and can expose the lungs to unwanted compounds. Understanding your equipment and how you use it can help support more informed choices.
Consider your materials
Where possible, choose pipes made from materials designed for cannabis consumption, such as glass or other purpose made materials.
If creating a homemade setup, avoid materials such as plastic or aluminium foil that are not designed to be heated and inhaled through as inhaling them can cause avaidable harm.
Keep Your Pipe Clean
Residue can build up inside a pipe over time which affects the taste, airflow and overall experience.
For many pipes, isopropyl alcohol and pipe cleaners or small brushes are commonly used to help remove buildup. Allowing the pipe to soak can also help loosen stubborn residue before cleaning.
After cleaning with isopropyl alcohol, allow the pipe to fully air dry in a well-ventilated area before using it again. Avoid using the pipe until any remaining alcohol has evaporated.
Different materials may require different cleaning approaches, so make sure the method you choose is suitable for your pipe.
Be Mindful of Heat
Pipes can become very hot during use.
Allowing your pipe to cool between sessions and handling it carefully can avoid overheating the cannabis, and can help reduce the risk of accidental burns or overheating of the cannabis.
Use a Screen Where Appropriate
Some people use pipe screens to help prevent ash and plant material from being inhaled.
Consider Your Inhalation Method
Combustion produces smoke, which contains compounds that can irritate the lungs and airways.
Some people choose alternatives such as dry herb vapes or other non inhalation consumption methods to reduce exposure to smoke.
Understanding the differences between methods can help you make choices that align with your goals.
Sharing Pipes
Sharing pipes can increase the chance of passing on germs through shared contact points. Cleaning the mouthpiece between uses can help reduce this risk.
Community tip
Consider Your Heat Source
Some people use alternative heating sources such as hemp wick instead of directly using a lighter.
Hemp wick is commonly used with the idea that it reduces exposure to butane from lighters, although research comparing these methods is limited.
As with many harm reduction choices, understanding the options available can help you decide what works best for you.
